According to Clark's Commentary, Christ's use of the word "world" in His latter discourses was usually a reference to the world of the Jews—the Judaic system, as opposed to our neo-traditional idea of the "secular" realm. This definition helps a great many other passages make better sense.
Fast-forward to Americhurch, and the application might well being in the church (small c) but not of the church.
Another great podcast, Zeke. I listened last night, so all the details are hazy again (I've slept since then), but I really appreciated it.
A lot of times I feel like the evangelical church (Americhurch?) just cannot accept the fact that we live in grace now--done deal. We keep trying to "prove" ourselves to God, or the rest of the world, or whatever. In other words, we keep trying to do things in our own strength (such as NOT being "of the world") instead of resting in teh knowledge that Christ already accomplished all we need, and we can rest in that and trust in HIS action.
